I Love Lions, Part II

Breakfast

Etosha is a giant game park in Namibia.  It means the Great White Place as there is a giant salt pan in the middle.  The animals in many cases are right by the road and don’t run from vehicles because they’ve never been shot at here – being in a national park.  At night I heard 2 male lions having a roaring contest.  These pictures are from a group including 2 young lions and their girlfriend lionesses, and a few cubs.  We followed the whole group walking in the general direction of breakfast – a group of impala.  The impala come to attention, heads up and stiff.  They start to break up into the bushes and make a warning sound that is like a strong threat clearing.  The lions move all over and I’m juiced with adrenaline waiting to see a kill – but we move on before the lions strike.

Wow! Makes me kind of nervous but they are babies still, right? Looks like fun. Love Mom

I guess technically they’re babies, but they’re huge. The reason I’m holding a stick is to distract them – it’s disarming how similar they behave to housecats, you wave a stick in their face and they’re all over it.

Nice light for pictures. The eye contact with the lioness… awesome!
